In years past, kids didn’t start orthodontic treatment until their teen years. These days though, we recommend a younger start for the best possible results. Along with the American Association of Orthodontists, we suggest that kids have their first appointment with an orthodontist at around 7 years old. At this age, kids are just starting to get their first permanent teeth, and by starting early, we can prevent problems with crowding or jaw alignment.

What’s an “Orthodontic Screening?”
When your child comes in for her first orthodontic screening, we’ll do an exam, maybe take some x-rays, and then we’ll chat a little about how things are going. We’ll make sure that your child is losing her baby teeth in the right order, and we’ll look at the x-rays to make sure that all the adult teeth are lined up right.
Each child develops a little differently, and sometimes parents are concerned about problems like thumb sucking, crowding, overbites or underbites. By coming in for an orthodontic screening, we can tackle these things together and work out plans for treatment.
After the first screening, we’ll check back in every 6-12 months and see how things are coming along. This will help us to see if kid’s braces or other treatments are needed.
